Extent of Sedge-Grass Meadow in a Lake Michigan Drowned River Mouth Wetland Dictated by Topography and Lake Level

چکیده

Water-level fluctuations are critical in maintaining diversity of plant communities Great Lakes wetlands. Sedge-grass meadows especially sensitive to such fluctuations. We conducted vegetation sampling a sedge-grass dominated Lake Michigan drowned river mouth wetland 1995, 2002, and 2010 following high lake levels 1986 1997. also photointerpretation studies 16 years dating back 1965 include responses 1952 1974. Topographic data were collected assess their influence on areal extent meadow. Dominant species short emergent submersed/floating changed with water availability from 1995 extreme low 2002 2010. meadow was by Calamagrostis canadensis Carex stricta all sampled, but Importance Values differed among partly due newly exposed areas. Photointerpretation showed significant relation between percent summer level, as well the number since an level. From topographic map created, we calculated cumulative area above each 0.2-m contour determine dewatered select levels. When compared those years, relative changes both predicted land surface demonstrated that accuracy level predictor is dependent topography. Our results regarding relations plant-community response hydrology applicable other

Genetic structure of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) in Lake Michigan

Genetic relationships among lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) spawning aggregates in Lake Michigan were assessed and used to predict a stock or management unit (MU) model for the resource. We hypothesized that distinct spawning aggregates represented potential MUs and that differences at molecular markers underlie population differentiation. Genetic stock identification using 11 microsate...

Recent water level declines in the Lake Michigan-Huron system.

Great Lakes water levels have fluctuated over thousands of years. High water levels were a problem in the 1980s, but a recent sudden drop in Lakes Michigan and Huron has caused particular concern, in part because lower water levels are consistent with many global climate change scenarios. We examined water level data (1860-2006) representing Lakes Michigan and Huron to evaluate changes in both ...

Recovery of sequences and extent of ancient lake in Jazmourian Playa based on lake terraces in Quaternary

Extended abstract 1-Introduction The natural environment is affected by climate, and its changes have different geomorphic forms. The dominance of different climatic phases and changes in the balance of matter and energy cause different shaping systems in the environment. Ancient lakes are one of the geomorphic forms of the Quaternary period, and today many of these lakes are either complete...
